In commemoration of the 2023 Green Ghana Day, the Faculty of Natural Resources (FRNR) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, in collaboration with the Ghana Institute of Foresters, organised a tree-planting programme at the Domeabra and Anwomaso Plantation sites on Friday, 9th June 2022. This initiative aligns with Ghana's National Climate Change Policy and contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action): Taking urgent measures to combat climate change and its impacts.
Professor Emmanuel Danquah, the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Resources, emphasised the project's significance in providing practical training opportunities to students, in line with the Vice-Chancellor's vision. He expressed gratitude to the University's Management for their unwavering support since the programme's inception.
A number of Ten Thousand (10,000) seedlings including Swietenia mahagoni, Tectona grandis, Cedrela odorata, Terminalia superba, and Terminalia ivorensis were planted across the Kwamo, Anwomaso, and Domeabra KNUST plantation sites. The diverse selection of tree species aims to foster biodiversity and contribute to the restoration of natural ecosystems.
The tree-planting programme received support from Agro Crown West Africa Company Limited (AgroCrown), who generously contributed 10 cartons of (crownsate) a non-selective contact herbicide with a broad spectrum of applications in agriculture and non-agricultural settings for the control of annual and perennial grasses and broad-leaved weeds and five spraying machines.
